What’s Brewing for April

 Mug Club Update

This week is your last chance to renew your membership. Those on the waiting list will be contacted to fill expired spots beginning in early April.

 Highlights

 Craft Brewer’s Conference

We’ll be attending the Craft Brewer’s Conference and World Beer Expo in San Diego the week of April 13th. That means we’ll be closed that week—Wednesday, April 16 and the weekend of April 18-19.

 We won the lottery!!!!

We’re talking about the hop lottery organized by the Boston Beer Company, of course. BBC, maker of Sam Adams, set aside 20,000 pounds of imported German and English hops at cost to U.S. craft brewers to help weather the severe hop shortage. Some breweries are even in danger of closing so it wasn’t a surprise that 400 requested more than 100,000 pounds, thus necessitating the lottery. We received the news that Worth Brewing Company was the lucky recipient of 88 pounds of imported German Tettnanger hops. So think kindly of Sam Adams when you’re enjoying a German lager at Worth Brewing Company in 2008, and be sure to check out their tremendous range of beers. Peter’s favorite SA products: Sam Adams Boston Lager, Double Bock (good luck finding it in Iowa), Black Lager.

 Happy Anniversary:

We celebrated one year in business in March to a raucous crowd March 15th. Thanks to everyone who helped make Year One a success.

 Pub Quiz Night a Smash

Our first Pub Quiz night on Wednesday, March 19 was a huge success. The room was packed with 8 teams, the winners pocketing about $90. We’ll plan to have another soon.

 Upcoming Specialty beers

April

English Old Ale is malty-sweet with fruity esters, often with a complex blend of dried-fruit, vinous, caramelly, molasses, nutty, toffee, treacle, and/or other specialty malt aromas. Some alcohol and oxidative notes are acceptable, akin to those found in Sherry or Port. Hop aromas not usually present due to extended aging. Ours has been cold conditioning for a few months, but it’s best consumed at cellar temp (about 52 F).
