SPINNING THE CUP (EXTRA!) with DJ Narthex
Album: I mi smo došli ma red (2014)
OK, we’re not officially blogging today but I feel that as the holder of the sacred trust of music content steward of Pitch Invasion, something had to be done to recognize what Croatia did on Saturday. Hence our first-ever extra.
The challenge, I will confess, is I didn’t know much Croatian music. Maybe not any. Which is key to the fact that I haven’t featured any yet. Of course, the World Cup will teach if one is open to the lesson.
So within the past hour or so, I did some digging with the World Cup’s favorite musical teaching assistants, Spotify and YouTube. And I found this bit of Croatian sunshine.
From what I can glean, Pavel is a band from Zagreb that’s quite popular in Croatia, with a frontman who’s been part of the pop/indie scene for some years, with a Brit Pop bent.
This song’s title appears to translate to “Authentically Mediocre,” which has nothing to do with the Croatian national side’s play on Saturday. Where the song does bear some relevance, however, is in its fun, happy, relaxed, blue-skied optimism. Which I hope the super-resilient Croatian side can find at least a bit of, in what will be a very fast few days to Wednesday.
Nice to meet you, Pavel. Sorry it took me so long. Enjoy the rest of the tournament and, if I have this phrase right, sretno!
